Current research maintains that summer reading is a benefit to the continued academic achievement of students. Therefore, the teachers at SHJ encourage our students to take time over the summer to read at every opportunity!
In addition to books of personal choice that students may select to read on their own, all SHJ students are required to read one assigned book over the summer as part of their English Language Arts classes. All students will complete a comprehension test on their Summer Reading assigned book when we return to school in August. This assessment will enable our students to demonstrate their comprehension of the book they read, as well as their ability to analyze and connect with the literature. The expectation is that students will have finished the book by the first day of class. Summer Reading books may be used by classroom teachers for a class project or other assignment at any time during the academic year.
The following books are available at most bookstores, public libraries, online sources (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc.), and for download to e-readers. In addition, most books are available in audio format (Audible, etc.), which can aid a reader who is following along with a print format.
Math summer work is highly recommended for those students who are signed up to take Honors Algebra II, Pre-Calculus or AP Calculus. Download your packet below. If you complete your summer packet, you will receive extra credit at the beginning of the year. Get off to a great start in August and complete your packet!
